SPICING OUR LIVES

In the book of Esther Chapter 2:12, the Bible says” Now when every maid’s turn was come to go into king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their
purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;) (KJV)

It was like a beauty pageant. Virgins were lined up presented to the powerful King Xerxes to make his choice. His choice depended on one whole year of beauty treatments undertaken by Hegai, the king’s chamberlain. The beauty treatments, also known as purification, lasted for twelve months; six months with the oil of myrrh and six months with sweet odours and with other things(KJV) or “ six months of spices and ointment for women” (ESV)

The beauty treatments, mainly spices and aromatic resins was to prepare the
women to be presentable to the king, to endear them to him. It was to make them acceptable to the king and to make the king’s demeanor favorably disposed to them.

The call that went forth to all the one hundred and twenty-seven (127) provinces of King Xerxes’ great kingdom of the ancient world in search of a young woman to replace queen Vashti who had fallen out of favour with the king, is akin to the call or invitation that God, the great King of Heaven and Earth has called or extended to all and sundry (Matthew 11:28-30 KJV).

When the young women of the ancient Babylonian kingdom responded to the
clarion call, they were not immediately admitted to the presence of the king. They had to undergo some beauty treatments that prepared them for the king’s inner chambers.

Similarly, for you and I to be ready for the Heavenly King’s Inner Chambers, His Bedroom and the most intimate place at that, (speaking allegorically) we need that beauty preparations, the beauty treatments that our ‘Hegai’, the King’s Chamberlain, the Holy Spirit will need to wrought in our lives.

The Holy Spirit will need to apply His own spices as outlined in 2 Peter 1: 5-11 and as presented in Gal 5: 2-23 to our lives to make us beautiful and presentable to our King.

” For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to
goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in
increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. ( 2 Peter 1:5-11 NIV)

In the same vein, Galatians 5:22-23 admonishes us on spicing up our lives in this manner: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Gal 5:22-23 NIV).

In view of God’s eternal purpose for each of our lives, I implore you to allow the Holy Spirit to apply His spices to spice up your life and make you presentable to the King so you can become His specimen wherever you are. You will then exude the sweet odours and aroma of the Lord Jesus Christ himself as the scripture says “ … we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing”.(2 Cor.2:15 ESV)
